Autism Society Habilitation Association
“Asha” means “Hope” in Bangla. The Autism Society Habilitation Association (ASHA) was created in 2015 in response to an urgent need in the Bangladeshi community. We bring about hope by supporting children and adolescents with autism and providing a comprehensive support system to their families during a time of confusion and chaos. The unfortunate fact is that many Bangladeshi parents with children having ASD do not understand the diagnosis and do not have the resources to properly educate themselves and/or care for their children. Social stigma about mental health and autism are often propagated behind closed doors, disguised as religious teachings. Parents and family members, especially those who are economically disadvantaged, are often told that the only “cure” could be religious schools back home, or an orphanage or mental health hospital. All too often parents have felt forced to send their adult children back to Bangladesh to be cared for by relatives or poorly-trained healthcare professionals. Too many times, Bangladeshi migrant children with language barriers have been misdiagnosed and put through unnecessary and ineffective processes and treatment systems.
